Overview
An opportunity to explore the issues surrounding current policy and practice in matters to do with Child Protection. The day will be about the practical applications of such policies and procedures and it will offer delegates the opportunity to explore their own school’s current practice and to consider how it can be further developed or refined.
Objectives
An opportunity to:
- Turn Child Protection training into a reality for your school by considering the implications of the wide range of child protection issues now being faced by schools
- Work on developing policies and procedures for your own school
- Work alongside other Child Protection Officers and develop a network of support

What does Child protection mean in the 21st century? This will include a scenario based workshop and consider how we should be protecting pupils and from what!
11.00 - 11.20 Tea/coffee
11.20 - 12.50
Who is looking after you? How to look after your staff and yourself as Designated Child Protection Officer. An opportunity for delegates to:
- Discuss issues facing their schools and to consider how formal record keeping can assist and protect all staff members as well as pupils
- Consider the role of external agencies
- Consider the role of the Governing Body in supporting child protection issues

Policies and procedures - what needs to be in place? An opportunity to work on your current policy and procedures.
Plenary - child protection in the future as a result of proposed changes to current practice.

Facilitator's details
Sue Hearle began her teaching career 18 years ago as an English teacher. She has been in her current post as a Deputy Head Teacher for 6 years. This has included her role as Designated Child Protection Officer and she is responsible for all issues relating to Child Protection, including training staff and writing policies and procedures appertaining to Child Protection. During this time she has worked closely with Social Services and Senior members of the Education Welfare Service in order to develop and refine the way in which a school responds to the multifaceted nature of child protection.
Sue has a background in offering professional development. As well as establishing a comprehensive training programme at her current school, she has run courses on Aspiring to Middle Leadership, developing the role of the Head of Year and the Head of Department as well as presenting workshops on Effective Middle Leadership for HIAS.
